Haiti Facts

Dear Friends of Melissa’s Place, We receive many requests about what "life is like" for the citizens of Haiti, and wanted to share several insights with you to try to provide some perspective. Haiti Facts: (according to the UN) - 59%of Haiti’s 11.4 million population live on less than $2.00 per day. - 45% of Haiti’s population are threatened by acute food insecurity. - 100,000 children under the age of five are malnourished. - One in two Haitians use unsanitary water. Haiti continues to be a country that is in profound political crisis, that is magnified by the climate & geologic natural disasters the country has experiences over the last 10 years. Since the assassination of the President several years ago, they have struggled to stand up a functioning government, and social and economic services are severely lacking. Additionally, lack of government structure has enabled vicious gangs dominate daily life through warfare, sieges, and extortion. The citizens struggle daily with diseases such as cholera, high prices & inflation, widespread shortages of food, fuel and other necessities.
Fortunately, Melissa’s Place is located far from the densely populated Haitian capital of Port- au-Prince, where much of the gang violence and outbreaks of cholera are common. However, even outside the capital life is hard and many people are in need, which is why we want to continue to thank you for your donations to Melissa's Place. Melissa's Place strives to provide our young girls shelter and build their self-sufficiency through education, skill-building, and a nurturing home to creating a safe haven of empowerment and opportunity
Thanks to wonderful Friends like you, your donations help insure we can continue to provide a safe harbor for the girls of Melissa’s Place. Thank you for your continued support. Peace!
